About me

I am Jonathan Stökl, Lecturer in Hebrew Bible / Old Testament at the Department of Theology and Religious Studies at King's College London.
I studied theology and Semitic languages in Bielefeld, Berlin and Oxford. After finishing my doctorate (DPhil) about Prophecy in the Ancient Near East at Lady Margaret Hall and the Oriental Institute at Oxford I went to St. John's College, Cambridge for a post-doc before moving on to UCL's history department, and then to the Leiden Institute for Area Studies (LIAS) at Leiden University, as part of the ERC (European Research Council) project 'By the rivers of Babylon: New perspectives on Second Temple Judaism from cuneiform texts'.

Research Interests

I am interested in the languages, cultures and religions of the ancient Near East, in particular the following aspects:
  • Israel and Judah in the context of other ancient Near Eastern (Middle Eastern) cultures
  • Divination (including prophecy)
  • Priests and temples
  • Hebrew grammar and semantics
  • the composition of the Hebrew Bible
  • Gender, in particular the impact of gender on the roles of religious specialists (prophets, diviners, priests, etc)
  • History of the Levant between the Late Bronze Age and Bar Kokhba
